How to Set Up Left 4 Dead 2 Split-Screen

Left 4 Dead 2 was one of the first games to have a polished Nucleus handler. The setup is straightforward and the handler is very stable.

  1. 1.

    Install Nucleus Co-Op

Extract to C:\NucleusCo-op with Defender exclusions. Use 7-Zip with password 'nucleus'.

  2. 2.

    Get the L4D2 Handler

In Nucleus, search 'Left 4 Dead 2' and install. Point to left4dead2.exe in Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2.

  3. 3.

    Launch Steam

Steam must be open. Keep it running throughout your session.

  4. 4.

    Assign Input

Assign controllers (and optionally keyboard/mouse pairs) to each screen section.

  5. 5.

    Host LAN Game

Click Play. In the first instance, create a lobby and set it to LAN. In the second instance, open the console (tilde ~), type 'connect 127.0.0.1' or join via the lobby browser.

Tips

L4D2 is relatively lightweight — most modern PCs can run 4 instances without major performance issues.

Use the in-game console to connect instances: press ~ and type 'connect 127.0.0.1'.

The game supports both controllers and keyboard/mouse per instance — great for mixed-input setups.

Custom campaigns and maps work with the Nucleus setup as long as all instances have the same workshop content subscribed.

Versus mode and survival mode both work with the Nucleus split-screen handler.

Common Issues

L4D2 instances can't connect to each other +
Try connecting via the console: press ~ and type 'connect 127.0.0.1'. Also make sure Steam is in online mode.
VAC ban risk with Nucleus Co-Op and L4D2? +
Nucleus uses the built-in local multiplayer for LAN, which bypasses VAC servers. Do not use Nucleus to connect to official VAC-secured servers. The LAN mode is safe.

About Left 4 Dead 2 Split-Screen

Left 4 Dead 2 is Valve's 2009 co-operative zombie shooter, and it remains one of the most popular Nucleus Co-Op games due to its excellent 4-player co-op gameplay and the long-standing quality of its handler.

The game's Source engine is relatively lightweight compared to modern games, meaning most systems can run 4 instances simultaneously without hardware issues. This makes L4D2 an ideal game for introducing friends to Nucleus Co-Op.

The handler supports campaign co-op, survival mode, and versus mode. Custom campaigns downloaded from the Steam Workshop also work, provided all instances have the same content installed.

L4D2 is often recommended as the first game to try with Nucleus Co-Op because of its simplicity and reliability. If you can get L4D2 working, you will understand the core Nucleus workflow for most other games.
